BAU 2017: key topics for the future of building

BAU 2017 is getting ready to open its gates with four key topics that are critical to the future of building. Many exhibitors will orient their presentations to those topics and have corresponding solutions on display. In the fair's forums, architects, building engineers and project developers will explain and discuss various aspects of these key topics: intelligent facades; digital design, construction and management; smart buildings; living and building 2020. BAU, the World's Leading Trade Fair for Architecture, Materials and Systems, is the biggest and most important event in the sector. The next BAU takes place from January 16 to 21, 2017 at the Messe München exhibition center. Around 2,000 exhibitors from more than 40 countries and approximately 250,000 visitors from all around the world are expected to take part.

FEP, a market overview

The Board of Directors of the European Federation of the Parquet Industry met on 19 October 2016 and discussed amongst others both the parquet situation and recent economic indicators on the European market. The good start observed in many reporting European countries during the first months of the current year has been confirmed during the first semester of 2016, when compared to the same period of last year. Although the reported parquet sales figures are not booming, the positive trend continues and activity seems to consolidate in most of Europe.

Parquet sales are recovering a bit in Italy by 1 to 2% but from a very low level. Despite increases in bank lending, people are still reluctant to invest. A positive vote on the referendum to support the actual government is necessary to prevent a new crisis. The information provided to FEP points in the direction of an increase of the parquet sales by 3% in Austria, reflecting significant increases of investments in buildings. The Belgian market progressed by an estimated 3% during the first semester of 2016 and is expected to keep this pace up to the end of the current year. The first half of the year shows rather good results with an increase by 3% of the French sales although producers of solid wood parquet are not experiencing such positive developments. These trends should continue as there is no reason to expect a sudden turnaround. The German market grew with an estimated 3% in the first six months of the current year but is presently becoming more "difficult".

MADE expo towards a better future

The fair brings together design, construction systems, building performance and living comfort, all on one big site. To support growth on the construction market, MADE expo 2017 –Milan, Rho Fair, from 8th to 11th March - is focusing on materials, products and systems that help produce safe, high-performance and comfortable buildings. The Fair organizers are in talks with companies capable of presenting leadingedge materials and top-performing systems on the market. ANCE’s outlook for construction investment growth over the current year is for a 0.3% increase in real terms (1.3% on current terms). Data on extraordinary maintenance are also positive, with promising 1.9% growth expected by the end of the year (up 21.3% since 2008); by year-end, an increase of €1.3 billion is expected in property refurbishment investments, corresponding to a 1.9% increase on 2015. This performance is the result of stronger tax incentives for building refurbishment and energy efficiency, which are due to remain in place until December 2016. In addition to this, the government’s decision to extend its 65% ecobonus through to the end of 2017 will help the industry regain competitiveness and return to impressive growth rates. After such encouraging data, this is the perfect time for activities and initiatives.

A new way of building

MADE expo is set to play a pro-active role in to stimulate the recovery in the building market Construction and Materials Hall (Pavilion 6/10), where it is showcasing systems, products and solutions for a new way of building: a circular system that creates essential connections between all materials, panelling, wood, concrete, steel and the most advanced building technologies and techniques. For the first time, at a single location MADE expo is presenting a 16,000 m2+ exhibition area, a one-stop site for sustainable architecture, building energy efficiency and the presentation of all structural systems, materials, articles and high-performance products from the sectors of waterproofing, insulation, protection and recovery, colour, painting and surface treatments. Drawing on contributions from leading scientific enterprises and institutional entities, the show features a special focus on anti-seismic safety to promote and encourage awareness among industry professionals who work in structural engineering, geotechnics, geology, town planning, architecture, restoration, civil protection and environmental protection. More in-depth technical exploration of these and other topics is the order of the day at the second edition of BuildSMART!, organized in partnership with Agorà and a number of top industry players for the purpose of disseminating knowledge and promoting technological innovation in the construction industry. The event focuses on pressing topics in the construction sector, drawing on product innovation from exhibiting companies while developing inputs from industrial and scientific research to ensure that pavilion visits are a unique opportunity for new insight.
